Benefits of ISO 9001 Certification for Your Business

This standard is commonly requested in most tender processes. Having certification from a UKAS accredited certification body significantly boosts your credibility during supplier assessments and tender evaluations, increasing your chances of success. In essence, it enhances your probability of winning. The expenses incurred in obtaining ISO 9001 certification can often be recovered with just one successful bid.

Procurement organizations typically have established performance and quality criteria, including supplier and subcontractor evaluations. Setting formal objectives and targets is crucial, as the performance of your business may be critical for your customer to achieve their commercial promises.

Unlike Environmental or Health and Safety Management, quality doesn’t have strict legal requirements. However, delivering services/products with poor or inconsistent quality can lead customers to opt for your competitors. Even with customer satisfaction surveys, pinpointing why customers leave is challenging. Implementing a Quality Management System based on ISO 9001 assists you to understand the quality and suitability of your delivered services/products.

How long would it take to become approved?

The time taken to gain approval varies on your specific operations and methods. Charges are calculated on a daily basis, with rates varying for each unique business. Small businesses usually require around 5-6 days for the certification process. The final certification conducted by a UKAS approved body can cost between £1.500 and £5,000, and the certificate remains valid for three years.

What do I need to do?

Like most important projects, gaining ISO 9001 certification begins with defining exactly what processes and sections of your business you want certified, then setting objectives and targets for how this will be done. This should result in the generation of a top level statement of the businesses policy or strategy toward quality.

From this policy we then document how the business needs to operate, what controls are necessary to meet the targets and objectives you have set, and ensure the requirements of all stake holders are attained. In line with the mandatory requirements within ISO 9001 we then produce the necessary documentation. We will then complete internal audits to ensure that records are available to show the documented procedures have been implemented and are being followed and arrange for the certification body of your choice to visit to complete their assessments.
